Music theory is very important to lay a strong foundation in music academically. People don’t have to take music degree to learn about the music theory, but this area of learning will be really helpful to be a mean of communication with other music players. Join A Choir Group

Singing together is very fun and useful for children skill and personal growth.

  • First of all, children can be more motivated to sing together in a group.
  • Secondly, they can learn how to work in a group that everyone’s voice has to support each other.
  • Thirdly, a choir group is a way to make friends and socialize with others.

Here is a couple of ways you can get children join the choir groups:

  • If you have several children at home, you can create a choir group at home so you can perform any time when it is needed.
  • You can also join choir groups in a homeschool co-op or community, church, or any other institution where children can join.
  • Search for professional choir groups in your local area and apply.

Composer Study

A composer study can be either a part of the music appreciation or a separated subject. There are hundreds of composers from different times and places in the world. For local composers, you can do some research with children. We do learn the western composer study and notebooking activities. Here is some points kids learn in the study:

Here are some great resources for composer study:

Reading Music

Reading music is also a part of ways to include music in homeschool. It can be included in the music theory or a practice of playing the musical instruments. If children participate in an instrument exam, there will be a section of exam called the sight reading. That is an exam where examinees have to read piece of music notation and play it directly with the instrument. I am not sure with the percussion exam, but the keyboard music has this kind of exam.

Practice the sight reading can be done regularly to make the music reading more fluent so that kids can play music by reading directly from the partiture.

Imitating Music

I remember how my children learn how to hum and sing based on the music lead. It sounds very fun to see them doing it. This practice will also train them to imagine the sound and notes so that they can play what other people play or sing directly after they listen to the music. Imitating music can be a talent, but we also can practice it. I was not good at replaying or imitating music when I was young, but the experience has trained me well on my age at the moment. That is my personal experience about music imitation. It is a practice that becomes a habit.

Incorporate Music with Other Subjects

There are a lot of ways to incorporate music with other academic subjects. Here are some examples

  • Making a song to memorize facts in any subject
  • Connecting music and history
  • Learning about people and the culture through music
  • Using music to practice fractions

Analyze The Original Soundtrack of Movies

I think all movies use original soundtracks to bring the audience to the right atmosphere. I am a fan of original soundtracks a lot because it tells the story in more beautiful words. With the soundtracks, we can get more message of the story. For children, I like to use Disney movies original soundtracks for listening activities.
