Sometimes kids outgrow sports or perhaps they love sports but don’t seem as motivated to participate when out there on the field with their team. While you shouldn’t force your kids to practice too often at home, it’s motivational when you keep an open scheduled to practice during off game season. Practicing sports at home with the family can help make sports more fun for your kid.
Attend Sporting Events
The more people stay close to the real-life performance, the more interesting the object will be. It is the same as music, sports events are performances where people show off their ability to the audience. Whether it’s a local or away game, try to be at every sporting event possible to show your support for your kids. This will go a long way in motivating your kid to do better and participate in their youth sporting team.
Ask Questions
Too many questions will make your kid shut down but a couple of good questions about their practice or game will surely help motivate your kid in sports. This will show that you have an interest in what they have to say and how they feel things are going in their youth sports life.
Keep Open Mind
Always keep an open mind about the fact that your kid may outgrow a specific sport. Don’t force your kids to continue in a sport that they no longer have a passion for. Do your best to encourage them to finish out the season, as they made this commitment but after that let them change sports.
Encourage Choices
Allow your kid to make their own choices in sports. This goes so far as to let your kid suffer natural consequences from not practicing enough or being a non-active member of the team during games. Encourage your kid to make their own positive or negative decisions when participating in sports.
Praise Good Effort
Be sure to focus on the positive effort of your kid during their practices and games. This will help encourage your kids to be more active in sports and enjoy coming home to talk about all of the good moves they had out there on the field that day.
Let your Kid Be Who They Are
Lastly, you’ll want to allow your kid to be who they are. Whatever sport they’re interested in and whatever level that they’re playing at is what they’re comfortable with. While you can motivate them to try harder, their motivational levels will come with age and their own self-motivation.
