Welcome to the rainy season 2013 in Surabaya. This November the sky in Surabaya start to be cloudy most of the day. I think it is better than last year that the rain poured down around December. Once it is bright, it would be extremely hot. Once the weather is very hot, the next rain will be much harder. That is what is happening above the Surabaya sky.
It is great that finally the hot season is over. We can dress much more elegant as we are not as sweaty as before. Children look fresher and more handsome of course. We don't have to turn on the AC at night or in the midday. It means that we save a lot of money from AC. We also don't need to water the plants daily as the rain replaces that chore. There are also some fruits harvested during the rany season like avocado, rambutan, mango, etc.
On the other hand, rainy season is also another disaster for us. It brings flood everywhere as the drains are stuck everywhere so that the garbage which should be thrown in the garbage bin makes the drain stuck. It also happened last week in my house. Our helper just sneaked off last week when it started raining. Soon when another rain was poured down, we found that one of the drains was stuck and made our house got flood. It was very lucky that our plumber was working so that he could fix it. He found some plastic wrapping was the culprit. It seemed that the helper didn't put the dust and rubbish she collected in the right place so that it made the drain stuck.
Rainy season also made some disease. It happens usually during the transition between rainy and hot seasons. We have to keep our immune system on a great performance. It is an old story. There are usually some scarlet fevers around as people rarely clean up their puddles. There are also some diarrhea diseases as ther are a lot of flies along the harvest of many sweet fruits. We should take care of our healthy extra carefully.
We need to be careful when we drive around the hilly and mountainous roads as there are usually some landslides. There are a lot of illegal tree cutting down that makes the land soil lacks of tier. The landslides are getting worse when it happens at the same time with flood. That is a disaster in my country that often happens.
Laundry is the most horrible problem beside the roof leak. We take shower two or three times daily here as the weather is very humid. The sun rarely shines during the day. It might shine in a short time, but it isn't enough for drying all of our clothes. We sometimes build extra lines indoors to get the clothes dry up. It gets worse when we have babies. Two of my sons were born during the rainy season and they didn't wear disposable diapers at home as we tried hard to prevent the rash caused by disposable diapers. They wore traditional clothes diapers. Can you imagine how our laundry during the rainy season was?
Rainy season also means traffic jam here. Vehicles tend to run slowly and many people riding motorcycle stop along the road to get shelter during the rain. The hard rain accompanied by thunder makes their raincoat cannot afford their safety. Sometimes when the rain is very hard our view sight is only 2 m distance. Can you imagine how the plane will land? There are usually some postponed flight in the airport.
Raining in tropical country here might be a bit different from other subtropical countries. Wearing umbrella and raincoat often cannot protect us from the water at all as the rain is usually accompanied by strong wind and thunder. In a very hard rain, the sky is dark even it looks like at night. Maybe you call it as storm.
During the rainy season, we often change our schedule in the afternoon. We often skip the swimming lessons to avoid the danger of thunder. We sometimes skip afternoon music lesson as we cannot see the road or we won't be able to get out of the car.
It might be too late to do some rainy season preparation, but please try to do it to get things well.
- Prepare some umbrellas to put in the car and at home. It is good if everyone has private umbrella.
- Get some raincoat stand by in your motorcycle if you have any
- Clean up the ditch in front of your house or in your house to avoid local and road flood
- Clean up regularly any water container to avoid mosquitos.
- Keep some candles and fueled emergency lamps to anticipate when the light go off,
- Check your roof, all channel, and pipes to make sure there isn't any leak.
- Spray your house with anti mosquito chemical to get it free from any dangerous mosquito
- It will be great if you have emergency and temporarily place to hang and dry up your clothes
Thanks God we have on time rainy season. I hope that this year rainy season will go on well.
If you are anything like me, you hate the rainy season. When it rains I just want to stay in and do nothing. I guess I hate having to get in and out in the rain. It can rain, just don’t wait until I have somewhere to go! 🙂 lol
Going out is another trouble in rainy season. You are right.
This is really interesting. We don’t have a rainy season here. The closest we may have is Spring, but even then we don’t get that much rain.
It is nice to play under the rain sometimes. Not the thunder rain. LOL. We don’t have winter either.
I’m glad I don’t have a rainy season either. Although it is rather cold here right now too! My sister lives in South Africa and it gets a rainy season, and they have to hang their clothes up too–but she can do it in her garage if she has to. But she has no helper or air conditioning–and she’s from America originally!
The garage exactly changes into hanging clothes room in the morning till afternoon in rainy seasons. I didn’t have any air conditioning until 2 years age when we could not stand with the weather that got hotter and hotter. Your sister is a great Momma. Living in overseas is not something easy.
We don’t have what we call a rainy season, but some years in the summer, we get a lot more rain than I want. Right now, we are in winter and it is snow, snow and more snow.
