As an Asian, I am proud to be able to share this Homeschool Geography and History curriculum written by Bonnie Rose Hudson, Asia: Its People and History.
Bonnie Rose Hudson works with bothSchoolhouseTeachers.com (http://schoolhouseteachers.com) and The Old Schoolhouse Magazine® as a curriculum creator and editorial assistant. Her heart’s desire is for every child to feel the love of God and know how special they are to Him. She would love for you to stop by and meet the star of her children’s series at Exploring with Jake (http://writebonnierose.wordpress.com/), look through the 10/40 window of the world and join others in prayer at Looking Out the 10/40 Window (http://lookingoutthe1040window.wordpress.com/), or stop by her author’s blogWriteBonnieRose.com (http://writebonnierose.com) for fun printables and discover how you can write for the homeschool market.
Asia is home to more than fifty countries and territories and roughly three-fifths of the world’s population. Could you use some help introducing your family to this vast land? This sixteen-week course presents a brief picture of six nations: Laos, Bangladesh, Nepal, China, Iran, Vietnam. It is by no means all encompassing. Its purpose is to introduce your students to the people of Asia, share their stories, and spark curiosity.
It takes approximately 4 weeks scheduled for each country. Each country lesson has:
- Story with discussion questions. I was surprised that the stories are Christian missionaries touched. It shows how Christianity is treated in each country. Some Christian persecutions are revealed here softly which is suitable with kids ages.
- A historical and geographical information about the countries with some activities which varies from cooking, puzzles, and mapping.
- What life as Christians looks like in each country which leads to prayer for Asia and the people. There are also some biblical worldview involved in each story and discussion in Asia:Its People and History.
We can say personally that this book is quite unique for us. We have never read a history and geography book with prayer for missionaries before. Kids just opened their mouth to read how the life as Christians is different from what they have at the moment. This book is really touching for them.
There are also some free printables for this book: 6 printable copywork sheets and 4 word puzzles waiting for everyone over at http://writebonnierose.com/asia-its-people-and-history-bonus-content/.
We did the China lessons together. We added up more Catholic missionaries in the lessons and kids really enjoy the lessons. We use the historical parts of China as a introduction to Microsoft Power Point presentation you can see.
The China history is very interesting and simple. It consists of some information about each dynasty ruled in China until the founding of Communism. Each paragraph of the dynasty gives information about the achievement of the dynasty in a very short and simple way without reducing the amazement of kids. It seems what kids has learnt and read previously is presented in a much simple way so that they got a lot of AHA moments with this book.
During the learning process, kids showed off all references that they have read to match the information. What made me surprised was they can blend the information in the book with their previous knowledge before they could memorize it very well although I didn’t ask them to do that.
I think the next series of this book should be written. What countries in Asia would you like to be written? Please comment below.
