It is almost 2 months since we started our 2014/2015 academic year in our fourth academic year of homeschooling our children. We still have some denials and some cynical responses around our homeschooling and I think it is going to be forever before all children finish their education. For some denials you might read other posts:
Now I am going to go further with the disciplin habit in terms of discipline. Discipline can be related with time and physical performance. It includes the daily homeschooling styles.
There are some controversial issues regarding this topic. Some family prefer having a very flexible things, including the time and physical appearance, while others love school at home things. In other words, there are a lot of homeschooling families that adores freedom, but there are some of them that get worried about the freedom. Most people outside the homeschooling world would like to question a lot about the freedom of homeschooling in daily homeschooling styles. What about yours? Which side do you belong to?
We have never thought about the homeschooling physical appearance in our first 2 years of homeschooling. Kids just wear t-shirt and they don't wear any sandals in daily homeschooling lessons. I just let them put their legs on their chair at that time. Am I too lose? Many people said so. On the other hand, I was a bit strict towards their time limit. It worked well as they might be still younger and just primary school ages. Whatever protest I had, I just tried to ignore them. Is there anyone of you that has the same style like ours was? Here are some thoughts in my mind
I would like to get kids comfortable in their learning
Comfortability is very important for younger children to learn. Many people said that my kids look uncivilized wearing t-shirt and sandals schooling at home. What do you think? Many civilized and high educated people who wear elegant costumes daily have uncivilized manner or morale. Is that right? As long as my younger kids felt happy to learn, then why not just wearing t-shirt or even pyjamas schooling at home is allowed? This is a bit rebellion, I think.
It is homeschooling, not school at home
Many people still cannot accept the existence of homeschooling as a different form of school at home. We don't replace the public school existence. Therefore, we don't duplicate the public school culture in many different ways, including wearing uniforms and shoes. In fact, many homeschool family duplicating school culture will get burnt out pretty soon. We are family based education that has unique identity.
Kids need to have short time of lessons so that they can concentrate much better.
I would like to confess that I was pretty stressful facing my sons who has short span of concentration ability. They could not concentrate for one thing in longer time. For that purpose, I use timer in our homeschooling to control our time in schooling. Therefore, we need shorter time for each lesson to get them not bored easily.
The time is flying. After three years, our condition changes. We are faced with homeschooling teens at the moment. They are quite different now. I don't say that they are much better in some ways, but they are just different behaving as teenagers. Unfortunately, I found that some feet get flatten. I feel so sorry for that. It gives a lot of effects towards their physical balance. I am still not sure if it is a natural fact or a bare feet effect. At the same time, some subjects demand longer time to finish. Therefore, we change our style. Kids need to wear trainers, standard t-shirt and shorts, and watch. Is it too much? Let's see why.
They need to shape their feet so that they are not flatten
Well, this is our main goal at the moment to fix their flatten feet. It really gives undesirable effects toward their achievement in many sports or physical activities. As a matter of fact, the flatten feed kid cannot show maximum achievement in whatever sports he takes. He cannot control his balance as what I said previously. Therefore, we met a therapist who make a specific soles for his feet that he has to wear 10 hours a day. Well, as I feel that I need to prevent the same case with other son who shows almost similar symptoms (is going to be flatten), we decide that they need to wear shoes with better clothes (so that they won't look weird wearing shoes). It has been quite a hard time, but we have done it for 2 months now. I thought that they would reject the idea, but it seems it doesn't happen.
Having casual standard clothes will give them more confidence
At the moment, my teenagers have more outside activities where they are involved some organization. They start to show off as teenagers. Having them casual standard clothes that look like uniforms seems can give them more confidence, especially when they go to outside activities. They have different clothing style. One of them love wearing standard better T-Shirt with knee length pants, while the other loves wearing soccer clothes all of the time. At least they have standard clothes to wear and that makes them easier to choose. I don't need to complain about the model of clothes they wear anymore.
They like to manage their own time
Please, don't have misunderstanding about this one. I don't say that kids can manage their time well. As teenagers, they start to have some rebellion to show off their identity, I can say. Well, in the past I used to limit their time very strictly. Now they don't want being control too much. AT the same time, many subjects need longer and even uncertain time to finish. What I can do is just like a security guard. I give them their weekly lesson plan that we have compromised and they will arrange how they can finish them all. I don't use timer as much as I was anymore. Instead, they start to watch their time on their watch and clock.
Well, every homeschooling family has unique condition and situation that there shouldn't be any exact daily homeschooling time done by all homeschooling families. I do really wish that more people will understand about this fact. Homeschooling is a family based education which is different from the public school at all. Therefore, the daily homeschooling styles can change also along with the time. What about yours?
