7 Effective Ways to Improve Reading Skills with Online Language Arts Platform

Many children start reading since they are young, but it is not easy to improve reading skills along with the increased academic and interest demands. If you are looking for effective ways to improve reading skills, you have come to the right site. I would like to share how to improve reading skills with a wonderful online language arts platform from Lightsail, which is really fit for homeschoolers.

I was compensated for my time in writing this post.  All opinions are my own and I’m genuinely thrilled to partner with LightSail

Before we continue with our experience and tips, you should know that we are not native English speakers. In this case, English is our second language in communication. Thus, my son might look slower in his progress than the native speakers. We are so glad to be able to access LightSail for Homeschoolers because we don’t have any easy and affordable access to English books and printed learning resources. There is not any public library and the price to get English learning resources is really high. Therefore, we are very lucky to be able to work with LightSail

What is Lightsail

LightSail for Homeschoolers is a cool online language arts platform for grades pre-K through 12. This program is very flexible and adaptive for learners with different backgrounds. A foundation in the science of reading and writing combined with the experience of a team of home educators creates a family-friendly learning experience advancing skills in reading, writing, vocabulary, and fluency. LightSail provides tens of thousands of ChildSafe books and multimedia resources from leading publishers such as World Book and Lerner Publishing.

Our Experience with Lightsail Online Language Arts Platform

During our experience with LightSail for Homeschoolers, we are so grateful to get some benefits more than we expected previously.

Support ESL

As the nature of LightSail is an adaptive online language arts platform, we have been very happy because we can use this as English-as-Second-Language users. What does it mean? We don’t use English as fluent as those who are native speakers naturally. We are still struggling with a lot of vocabulary in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

LightSail for Homeschoolers is very helpful for us. It enables the defining word feature for any words we don’t understand in the books. Thus, we don’t need to look up them in dictionaries or to search them in Google Translator.

When a reader clicks a difficult word, and chooses “define word”, they will have a virtual dictionary

It is also very important for ESL users to get more experience with a lot of English materials to read, listen, write, and talk about. There are fewer English materials in most ESL countries than in English-speaking ones. Thus, LightSail has enriched our reading resources as well as skills a lot.

Very Challenging

We find that the cloze reading activities along the books and other reading resources are very challenging. Learners will need to work on 10 blank fields of cloze reading in sequence to “win” the activity. Once learners make a mistake, the whole cycle of cloze reading will be deleted and it will restart with a new cycle. Meanwhile, we cannot define the words in the cloze options. Thus, we will have to comprehend the context of the cloze readings more deeply and seriously. It is great that we still have a chance to improve our score by reviewing and redoing the works in a separate section. It sounds likes we are not completely doomed.

Another challenging part is the Lexie reading score placement learners need to do before they start the program. The pretest looks boring and too complicated for us. I didn’t know the purpose and I also didn’t have any idea that Parent setting in can turn pretest off. After learners complete the activity, I was surprised that my son could reach the average level of reading for his age as an ESL learner. I felt that I didn’t give him enough before he did the placement activity or the power challenge activity.

Learners will need to work on 10 blank fields of cloze reading in sequence to “win” the activity.

Motivating Badges

There are some badges to collect as rewards for learners for completing certain missions in LighSail for Homeschoolers. Badge collection is very motivating for learners. They will try to work on the missions and complete them. This experience is so exciting for my son. He works hard to work more with the online language arts platform to get more badge. By working more, he will enjoy reading more and more indirectly.

LightSail for Homeschoolers separates parent dashboard from children. Thus, children can feel more independent in working on the online language arts platform in their own gadget with their own dashboard. On the other hand, parents are able to control the progress and problems in the learning process. To connect children and parents, there is a chat feature in LightSail for Homeschoolers that enables parents and children to communicate.

Parents can ask children what obstacles or problems they have during reading or doing other activities in the platform. Parents also can give motivation personally to children so they can be more persevere in working on the assignments.

Detail and Thorough Assessment

There is a detailed and thorough assessment from the program so that parents and learners will know the learning progress. Thus, they will know how to improve the learning achievement and how to move on to the more challenging steps for learners.

Besides assessment, there are also trackers of any activities children have done with LightSail for Homeschoolers that both parents and learners can follow and observe.

Trackers and assessments are very useful to
