Do your children join a music private lesson or a music community? Starting a music lesson might fun in the beginning, but it might cause boredom when they have joined for a certain period of time. It is something normal for everyone. It doesn't happen only to children. I also experience the same thing. The first time I joined a piano course, I was very enthusiastic so that I practiced every day twice or even thrice. However, when the time is going on, I feel bored, although I know I have invested a lot to buy a piano. Does it happen to children? Based on that experience, I learn some things on how to motivate children to keep learning music.
How to motivate children to keep learning music
Do children feel bored to practice instrument daily? Get some recorder and record them perform their songs. You don't need something sophisticated to record. You can use your mobile smartphone. Get them to pretend to be a professional musician. Show them the recording result. It will be good for them to evaluate what they have done so they can be motivated to practice more to get better result.
Children might get bored because they don't know what points they need to practice. It often happens that my children only do practice for the last song they play in the private music course. They don't practice the other points they need to do. It is simply because they forget the other points to practice. To avoid this, you can make a practice checklist so that their practice time is more effective and they don't get bored because they can practice more things, not based on what they remember.
Although parents cannot play any musical instrument, there are many ways they can be involved in the music learning. Parents can help children to be discipline in practicing the musical instrument daily. Just simply turn on your mobile phone alarm and get around them while they practice. Children might feel intimidated at first, but they will get used to do daily practice.
Parents also can help children to set music goals. You can set a target with children and always remind them of this. There are many ways to make targets in music:
- The number of composition they can master in a month or year.
- Levels and score of music exams
- Performance or competition achievements
- The speed they can master certain composition
Parents can sit and enjoy the music lesson children have in the private or group music course. They can know the children's progress accurately. Therefore, they can motivate and know well what children need in the music learning. I have 3 sons and until right now, I learn that my sons show great musical skill progress when I accompany them in their music lessons.
Join some concerts will indirectly give a target of mastery for children. Besides giving more confidence, joining concerts is a good education to teach children how to perform in front of the public, start from the salute, setting up body/instrument, to the grooming and ethics. Joining concerts will give children more motivation to learn and practice more.
Participate in Competition
Joining a music competition is not cheap on average. Are children good enough to join a competition? They don't have to. The level of preparation might be more than the concert if your children are more serious. Competition is another event that can give “stress” to children, but it will also make them practice more. They will learn how to compete to “win”.
Having some regular family time when children play their instrument with other family members as the audience will make them more confident. They will try to practice daily to perform well in the recital time.
Watching concerts can give more motivation for children to play better. You don't need to purchase tickets, but you can watch a lot of concert video in youtube. We love watching concerts on youtube and it is like injecting motivation to children. You need to try this one. Get children comment to the concert to train them to appreciate the musician.
