How to Start Assigning Chores to Children
Talk the importance
You won’t need to talk about the importance of doing daily chores to the young age children, but it will be necessary if you have teenagers or the elementary-leveled children, discussing the importance of doing the daily chores is really crucial. Their critical and logical thinking is much more advance than the small one. They might question why they need to change their routine. Teenagers might disapprove or argue with you, but take it easy and try to do it with them.
Give training and accompany
Rather than giving command, assignments, and instruction to do the daily chores, it is better to train and do the chores with them when it starts. You will also need to schedule occasionally to work with them. To start doing the daily chores, children will need some training. You cannot expect them to show a perfect result when children don’t know how to do it properly. Show them how to do it and accompany them so you can be a good model for children. Thus, you will less stressful when you
Think the appropriate age level
Make sure that the chores assigned to children are appropriate to their age level so they can do the work properly. Using vacuum cleaners is more appropriate for children over 7 years old rather than those younger. Younger children can pick up toys and match the socks more reasonably.
Consider reward system
Most children need external motivation to do something. It is quite considerably to start before they are used to the routine. You can think of the incentives you might give to children. It is up to you because you know the best for your children. You can use some privilege and chance to do or to purchase something as well.
Use visual reminders
Children will not happy to hear you reminding them doing things. They will just consider you nagging and fuzzy. Some visual reminder will be helpful and lessen your frustration. Using chore cards, chore list, chore board, or anything that will guide children doing things should work well. You will also be able to check their works more thoroughly.
As a household manager, you need to show children how the visual reminders (chore cards) work. You also need to put them somewhere everyone can see easily. Keep them easy to access and follow
Check their work
Before children claim that they have finished their list, you should check their work. It will train them to be more responsible for their works. At the same time, children will know if they have already met the finished standard. Once children are settled with the system and habits, you can leave them more independently by checking less frequently. However, it is better for you to keep them supervised.
If you give rewards to them, you need to be consistent with them. It also means that there is not any reward when they don’t work and there is less reward for sloppy works. Kids need to understand that no work = no pay.
Start and move on steadily
Don’t expect children to start the daily chores with a lot of works to do. They will get shocked. They might do that happily, but it will last in a shorter time. It is better to start with a few things to do and work them out steadily. Thus, you and your children will not be shocked and frustrated.
Expect Responsibility than Quantity
Assigning daily chores to children is expected to train them to be responsible children. They supposed to finish the chores properly to benefit others and themselves. Thus, they need to do the works seriously so that they maintain the expected quality. Being fast and smart is important, but to educate children, you teach them to be responsible. Therefore, parents should prioritize the responsibility more than the quantity.
