There are many ways to teach and learn the visual arts. However, not everyone is interested to learn the visual arts directly due to lack of confidence and inspiration, for example. In this case, you can try to teach arts through other subjects. If your children love social subjects, here is the article you will need to read. Today, I would like to share some tips about how to teach Arts to the social study lovers.
Do you have children who are interested in history and the other subjects more than the visual arts? Yes, I have. Thus, I was happy to get my hands on Art History Kids. I was given access to the program for free and compensated for my time. I was not required to give a positive review, and all thoughts and opinions are 100% my own. Please see my full disclosure for details. After using that program, I would like to share some knowledge that might be useful for you
How to Teach Arts to The Social Study Lovers
Learning arts based on the social study lessons is not less fun than the pure arts lessons. It will let learners to get immersed in the subjects. Here are some ways you can adapt to learn the visual arts through several subjects. You can pick 1 subject for each of the art lesson topic or you can take all the activities below
Explore The History
Like the title of the art program we join, Art History Kids, you can learn the visual arts based on the history. There are several eras that you can pick the art aspects to study from the prehistory to the modern days. First of all, learners need to be engaged to the history. Use several interactive materials and get learners engaged in the topic. You can create a diagram or notes, and anything that learners will get engaged in the time. Next, bring up some arts topic to discuss and to work on.
Pick An Artist
A work of arts is an expression of feeling, experience, and dream of the artist or the creator. Thus, learning about the life of the artists will be very helpful for learners to appreciate and understand the masterpiece. Once they understand and appreciate it, they will be more interested in doing the artworks.
Pick An Arts Topic
For the pure arts lessons, you can explore the elements of arts, the media experience, and the skills or techniques along with the integrated art study. Therefore, the pure art lessons is blended into the subject and it leads to the context well.
Learn about the Country
You can also explore the country where the masterpiece was created or the artist came from. Recognize the other masterpiece from the same country in the same era. By learning the background of the artist, learners can get more knowledge of geography, history, and art philosophy at the same time.
Do Some Conversation about The Masterpiece
Before creating a masterpiece of arts, it is great when learners can appreciate and learn the art masterpieces of famous artists. With the masterpiece, learners know the high standard of work and what makes a masterpiece a good one to enjoy.
Read A Story Book Related to the Artist's Works and History
There are several fiction and non-fiction books and movies inspired by the artist works. You can read the books with/to children for them to enjoy the work of arts at the same time. Next, you can relate the publication of the books to the time when the work was a trend.
Integrate The Topic to Other Subjects
There are several subjects you can integrate the art lesson with. Other than history and geography, you can also integrate the art lessons to music, mathematics, and science. It will consume your time to plan and do them.
- When you do a certain era in the art lesson, you can listen to music in a similar era. Then you can discuss the atmosphere and elements of the art piece
- Color and shape composition will be a great topic for mathematics and science
Do Some Arts Project
Arts project is a great activity to apply what learners have learned and what they expect to happen. You will be able to review the art skills learned previously and the knowledge they have that they can apply to the art project.
Pick A Quote
You also can pick a quote related to the arts or life of the artist you are learning. Discuss the meaning and put it on the place learners usually can see clearly. It will give them more motivations to enjoy and work better
Introduce Various Media Related to The Era
Based on the art era, you can introduce learners to the media used in the majority of the work of arts. You might not be able to teach them if you are not artsy (same with me). However, there are a lot of online videos that can help you to do so.
How to Provide The Art Lessons to The Social Study Lovers
Doing the arts with the background of other subjects is really fun. Unfortunately, I got some problem with this method:
- Do you have time to create the materials? No, I don't.
- How do you handle the learners' work?
- What if they were confused and need some advice about some art skills? Can you provide that?
Delegation is the answer to those questions.
Art History Kids
Art History Kids is an online art course you can use with your children as learners. It provides weekly art lesson materials based on several points above, which are delivered weekly. Each month will have a unique topic organized by Lotus Steward, a homeschooling mom, a graphic designer, and an art history enthusiast. There is also a private FB group for you to communicate with her so you won't look like a lost sheep. If you want to do arts integrated to the social studies and other subjects, you will come to the right place.

As a digital arts program, I find that Art History Kids is a very unique one that will make homeschool moms and children fall in love.
