Ideas for Kids Fire Safety Education
The Smoking Detectors
Install smoke detectors at home and explain to kids the functions and how it works. They will learn about real life fire safety and will apply it in the future.
The Kitchen Rule
Teach children how to turn on and turn off the stove in the kitchen. You need to tell younger kids that they are not allowed to use the stove without any supervision. For teenagers, they can use stove as long as they are ready. Kids also need to know that we should not leave the stove on without any supervision.
The Causes of Fire
Brainstorm with kids about the causes of fire at different places, especially at home.
Then, you can take actions with children to prevent fire in your house based on the causes, such as:
- Checking the electricity installation
- Cleaning the chimney and stove to prevent uncontrolled fire
- Put a timer in the kitchen to prevent over cooking that leads to fire
- Make posters about how to prevent fire.
Teach older kids about the appropriate practice in using the electricity, including the cords, plug, and circuit. You can start from the easiest concept for the younger kids. The most important thing is that they need to know the danger of wrong use of electricity which causes fire.
Some Methods to Kill The Small Fire
Kids need to know some methods to kill the fire. Although they have known these methods, they are still required to get adults or to call the emergency to deal with fire. However, the knowledge will might be required in certain conditions. You might need to teach older children to do this and the younger children to watch only. It will start from
- How to use water and wet thick (rough) cloth such as mop to handle smaller fire.
- Using sand to deal with fire
- How to use fire extinguisher
Field Trips to A Fire Station
Visit the local fire station with an appointment. We can consider it as a trip. Firefighters will be more than happy to show kids their tools, machine, and trucks, as well as how they work.
Action Plan and Procedures in A Fire
Plan a procedure with kids what you will do when a fire happens in your house, in the classroom, or any other place.
- You can also do a simulation for such situation
- Make a checklist for the action plan
- Brainstorm for ways out of the house.
Here is a checklist of what they can do when they find a fire in a building they stay:
- Stay calm
- Call the emergency, if possible
- Plan or find a way out closer to them
- Use some movement as needed, such as kneeling, dropping, and rolling
- Not to move back inside
- Set to a meetup point
Reading books is very powerful to give some situation examples and to show kids how to act during the emergency fire. In addition, kids will see how the firefighters do their work. Therefore, kids is expected to show more respect and appraisal toward firefighters.
The story is about a girl who has a dragon friend which can make fire while he was having some tea with her. The girl teaches the dragon how to deal with fire so that it is not scary anymore.
I love this book a lot. It shows us the life of a firefighter named Big Frank. Reading this book, kids will be expected to appreciate firefighters better. We can see how the dangerous and challenging the fire fighting work. At the same time, they educate children more about fire safety.
I love all books by Gail Gibbon. Fire! Fire! teaches beginning readers about the important job of firemen in the community. There is a word list or glossary at the back of the book, with fire-fighting equipment keywords as well as a list of ways to prevent a fire and what to do if there is a fire. What a wonderful book to teach kids about fire safety.
This is a wonderful book for kids on 4-8 years old. The book is about Jessica who is afraid of many things, including fire. Her teacher, Mr. Martin teaches her several things to face fire. Then, she has to demonstrate it to kids at school.
Play some alert practice game to follow instruction when disasters happen. A game such as Simon Says which is modified into Fire Fighter Says is a great idea. Today, I would like to share a printable I got from Consumer Safety to my readers.
