When I learnt at school, I found that almost everyone just follow the teacher instruction nicely and obediently. Anyone that has different way of behave including different learning styles was considered as rude people since they didn’t follow what the teacher said. Most of the students just took notes whatever the teachers talked about. There was some discussion but most students didn’t know what to discuss and finally there was just one person turned up with one work representing the discussion group. It happened during 12 years I learnt at school. Don’t mention anything about personalized teaching and learning as integrating learning styles and multiples intelligences is really impossible with the ratio between teacher and learners.
The education world has changed step by step to adjust to other needs of learning style attention for students. However, there is in reality around me change in real life. Most of the activity at school is still taking a note which only can fulfil learning style and multiple intelligence of certain students.
Well, talking about learning styles, I just knew about the theory 14 years ago after reading a book lent by my friend. I was very impressed by the book and I took some notes from the book and made a presentation attached bellow:
Unfortunately, I really forgot about the title of the exact book that I read only for one night. I just browsed around my files and found those presentation files I made by myself. I think it would be useful for many people.
Just one book I read in the library 10 years ago I can remember: Ways of Learning: Learning Theories and Learning Styles in the Classroom (David Fulton Books). For honest also, I don’t really remember what the book was talking about, but it has really impressed me a lot. There are a lot of resources about learning styles like in Wikipedia and learning style online, but I really love the book as it touches the education side a lot.
Learning style is more on the pattern and environment each person learn easier or better. Learning about “Learning Style” will let you to another branch og knowledge I believe as it is a very deep subject.
The Multiple intelligence theory is deal with how smart people are in certain areas. The theory was developed by Howard Gardner. It argues that there isn’t any single number of IQ as all human is unique in certain different ways. It is more on what talent and interest someone has. The theory of multiple intelligence itself develops and extends into some more different areas. It is said that there are around 7 – 9 areas of intelligences that people might good at so that they are called “smart” in those areas:
- 1.1 Musical–rhythmic and harmonic
- 1.2 Visual–spatial
- 1.3 Verbal–linguistic
- 1.4 Logical–mathematical
- 1.5 Bodily–kinesthetic
- 1.6 Interpersonal
- 1.7 Intrapersonal
- 1.8 Naturalistic
- 1.9 Existential
Applying the theory in the school classroom will sound like when J. K. Rowling has to sit down side by side with Christiano Ronaldo, when Bill Gates has to sit on the same bench with Pablo Picasso, and when Beethoven has to sit in the same classroom with Barrack Obama. It must be a very funny classroom, isn’t it?
One benefit of homeschooling is that to be able to customize the learning style and multiple intelligence of the learners. This is one aspect that is often neglected by parents about their children. It happens also with me sometimes. I forget the precious benefits of homeschooling my children. By observing and following the learning styles and intelligence that children have, the process of teaching and learning should be much easier than forcing children to follow one kind of learning method or style. Both parents and children will have less stress in the teaching and learning process.
However, although everyone has different intelligences and learning styles all of them should have got similar basic of 3Rs at least to support their further specialization in each field of interest or talent. Therefore, parents should not give any excuse or claim toward their children’s learning style and types of dominant intelligence fanatically. Children should go to the real life which demand them to accept other kinds of learning styles and intelligence. Some introduction and application towards different kinds of learning styles and intelligence areas are needed to get kids knows what other people have and to give a sense of tolerance for kids to respect others.
By integrating learning styles and multiple intelligences customized for children, it is expected that children will understand by themselves about how best they learn in the future so that they can provide themselves what they are comfortable with independently.
