As a parent of three children, I feel that I need to learn a lot about parenting. All my children have different and unique characteristics and I try hard to learn how to deal with each of them. This is a lifetime learning for all parents to know their children better, isn’t it?
It is a learning journey for me to get the children behave and think in more mature ways. I sometimes feel it is an exhausting work for me and many parents. That’s right, parenting without children’s motivation is a hard work. My enthusiasm to the first book I read in 2015, Motivate Your Child: A Christian Parent’s Guide to Raising Kids Who Do What They Need to Do Without Being Told, is fulfilled by the publication of its companion, Motivate Your Child ACTION PLAN by the same authors, Dr. Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller, RN, BSN.
There are a lot of suggestions, philosophies, encouragements, and theories about how to build up self awareness for kids to do what they need to do in Motivate Your Child: A Christian Parent’s Guide to Raising Kids Who Do What They Need to Do Without Being Told. When I read the book, I just felt overwhelmed and too enthusiastic. On the other hand, I really need more guidelines to help me realize the ideas in the book step by step. Therefore, I was very excited to get the chance to review Motivate Your Child ACTION PLAN. It just answered the need of the guidelines.
Although you can use the books separately, it will be very ideal for you to have and read the books altogether. The main book is explaining the examples, background, and theories on how to motivate children. On the other hand, Motivate Your Child ACTION PLAN is dealing with the implementation of the main book, which is very precious for me. Here are some reasons to follow Motivate Your Child ACTION PLAN:
- There are some empty notebook pictures to give a time to think their own specific and unique strategies they use to each of the step.
- Motivate Your Child ACTION PLAN is very detail about the how and why certain action needs to be completed to support the desired result as it is mentioned in the main book.
- Motivate Your Child ACTION PLAN doesn’t let me dream about how to get my children motivated after reading the main book, but it leads me to approach my children with the heart parenting method and set the time limit into 40 days.
- There is always a session for evaluating the meeting with children. The result of the evaluation is used for the next action required.
- Taking some action to motivate children is really urgent and we should not delay the action anymore. The earlier children have awareness in doing things without being told, they will be able to achieve more things in their life.
Inside The Action Plan
Today I would like to share a few about the content of Motivate Your Child ACTION PLAN to help you get to know about the book. Here are the content list of the book:
Change in Forty Days
There should be a set time for change. By doing the plan well, there should be some change in the children’s motivation to help them growing better. There isn’t any promise that children will drastically perfect in the 40 days. The change will need the involvement of God and the will of the person.
Where Do You Want to Go?
In this chapter, readers are asked to be specific about the change itself. Parents are asked to think about the desired result and think better about it.
The Map to Get There
Readers will be involved to plan the way they need to go to achieve the desired result. With a plan, the road to the desired result should be better and organized since parents can think more logically.
This chapter reveals how parents and children can work together t achieve the goal. Children need to know parents’ expectation and vise versa. By following this chapter, it is expected that there will be stronger relationship between parents and children.
A Place for Firmness
The first component of change is discussed here. Following the step in this chapter, parents and children will build firmness as the factor which build motivation for change.
Visioning Moves You Forward
This chapter will aim for kids to know why they need to change. We might think that children have known about the reasons for them to change, but it seems that not everyone knows about it. Some steps to give the concept to children are discussed here.
Teaching Shows the Way
Many just want their children change without showing how to do that. Using the guideline here, parents are expected to show how to do it.
Spiritual Energy Provides Strength
As the first chapter said, change involves the will of the person itself and the involvement of God. In this chapter, parents are helped with how to plan the involvement of God to the life change.
Coaching Sets the Attitude
After both children and parents have the same path of being changed, it is the time for parents to help children to change. Even parents sometimes have to change by themselves before they ask children to change. It means parents don’t expect children to change instantly, but they help them to do it.
Building Motivation from Within
It is impossible to expect parents controlling children all of the time. This chapter will help parents to grow the inner motivation of children. I think this is the hardest part of the program. This is what many parents are expecting and here is the steps you need to do.
When the children have already got inner motivation, the wok has not stopped yet. Children still need some help to bring up the attitude and motivation so that it will stay with them while they are growing up.
Good Theology Makes it Work
This chapter is really Christian based that provides the theological approach as a foundation in parenting children.
