What do your children do when they have “free time” or in their “spare time”? On my posting yesterday, I wrote about the dangers of television and electronic games. Meanwhile, the electronic games take the biggest share of habits for children around the world. How do parents manage the playing time? What non electronic games do you use?
We live in a city, so we have only a few number of park to walk and to spend time nearby. It takes 15 minutes driving through crowded and hot roads to go to the park. Therefore, most children living in the city spend their spare time in front of the television or electronic games. I am very concerned about this as this habit might lead into some negative impacts.
Don't think that I hate television and electronic games. Playing games and watching Korean dramas are my hobbies. I introduced electronic games and television programs to my children also. However, I would not make them addicted to these modern virtual entertainments.
Managing Playing Time
The best way for parents in controlling their access to television and electronic games like aare:
- Watch and play with the children. Parents need to get involved in the television program choice and the electronic games they play.
- Manage the timing each time the children play. Watching and playing twice, each for 30 minutes will be much better rather than 1 hour at once. Using timer will be a fair way to manage their time.
- Arrange watching and playing schedules for each child. The schedule for each family will be different.
My children have 30 minutes for watching a cartoon and 30 minutes for watching documentaries (if they want) daily. They only can do computer works during weekdays, but they have @30 minutes play games on Fridays, @45 minutes play games on Saturdays, and 2 times 30 minutes play games on Sundays. When they break the rules, no game or TV on the next session.
They like playing Facebook games. Of course, I set their privacy just for them only and I have their passwords so I can check them regularly. I know what they are playing. Sometimes we discuss their levels in the games.
Non Electronic Games
On the weekdays, children can choose any of these non-electronic games as options for their playing time:
