Have you ever felt being regret for homeschooling your children? Honestly, I feel regret sometimes for not starting homeschooling children earlier. You might not think how big my gratitude for homeschooling gifts. I often feel regret for leaving my children a lot when I was a working outside home mom. I always missed my babies in my working place. God is great that finally, I can realize my dream to be a working at home mom and to educate my children. Well, homeschooling is not the perfect education for everyone. It doesn’t always run as perfect as you might imagine. There are some loves and hates about homeschooling for me. However, I feel really grateful.
My Gratitude for Homeschooling Gifts
The Chance to Know My Children
This is the greatest gift that makes me feel grateful for homeschooling my children. I know what they do most of the time, where they go, and what they like or dislike. Staying close with them, we can have more discussions so we know each other much better too. It is not about the good things only that I can find out of the children, but it is also about the bad and the worst of us. The process of knowing the children is also not By knowing them more, I become more aware about their uniqueness. I respect and try to treat them better and better as wonderful God’s creatures who are given to us. Thanks God for everything.
The Freedom of Learning
Being homeschooled, we are free to learn whatever we want, wherever we want, and whenever we want to. Does it mean we don’t have any routine or schedule? Having the freedom is a wonderful gift for us since we don’t have to learn and work under pressure of target made by other people. We give target for ourselves and we find a way to realize it. All what we do is not forced by the other people, but it comes from our self-consciousness. It is not easy to raise self-consciousness or self-motivation in the mind of children. One child is different from others. Therefore, finding the “right formula” for each child is one way to use the freedom of learning the most.

There is more time to explore talents
Each of my sons went to the public school until their second year of elementary grade. It was very terrible time for us. There wasn’t any more time other than the schooling matters. All of the non-school activities didn’t have any time to do. Kids went to school from 6:30 AM and they went home at 12:30 PM when they were in grade 1. The schooling time was getting longer and longer as they got into the bigger grades. Even their same aged friends right now go home at 03:30 PM in the weekdays. After school, they still had to do their homework or learn to prepare for the next day test. Not all schools have such kind of test daily. They just finished very late and they would be very tired so that they won’t be able to do any other activities outside school related activities. Meanwhile, they had been tired physically and mentally to start one.
Homeschooling our children, they can choose their interest and talents much better. Children live in a more balanced style. Their time is not monopolized by the schools.
Homeschooling has a great chance to be more flexible with our time and space. I am really grateful for still being able to work at home while accompanying my children learning together. Children can learn wherever and whenever comfortable with them. Once again, it doesn’t mean that we don’t have any routine or schedule so that we can learn as we pleased. We have a schedule and we are quite strict with it since the schedule is our tool to let us train ourselves to be professional people in the future. However, in the strict schedule, we have a freedom to manage the schedule and routine independently. I love to see kids scheduling their day early in the morning. They know what they will be comfortable to start and to fill in the day with their routine and schedule. It doesn’t just happen. They still need a lot of help, but it starts now.
When they feel super sleepy, they might work in the afternoon. When they feel annoyed in the study room, they can go near the laundry area to learn. However, we still have some restriction in the flexibility. For example, they are not allowed to learn on the bed since it won’t be good for their eyes and postures.
The great blessing of homeschooling is dealing with the customization for each children’s need, interest, and capability. I love to see children enjoy their learning since they feel comfortable with their level. In addition, they will feel more comfortable when they can learn something with the customized learning style approach. The same learning style approach was used in public school and can you imagine how it hurt my heart? Now that we have been homeschooling children, I am very happy that I don’t need to see them being forced to wear other people’s clothes.
More Economic and Comfortable Weekdays
There are many times that we feel grateful when we don’t need to be in a crowded mall. we can go anytime to the mall or any public places with much more economical rates. Some public places give special entry rates for visitors in the weekdays. There are also fewer people coming in the weekdays so that we can feel how great to be like the owner of the place.
Another privilege in using weekdays is about the lower price of some flights and hotels in the weekdays than they are at the weekends. We can travel and have some trips more than the normal school-aged children do.
Avoiding the Hot Traffic and Temperature
I am also thankful that children don’t need to spend their time in the car under the sunshine. It is incredibly hot here in Indonesia in the afternoon. When children went to the public school, I had to drop and pick them regularly to school. It was very torturing for us since the temperature outside made us thirsty and sweaty a lot. Having to learn after the horrible temperature won’t make them show the best of their performance, I believe.
The hot temperature didn’t come up alone. There was also some traffic jam everywhere outside so that we could not use our time effectively. Spending time in the traffic for children was something that we didn’t like a lot. At this moment, we don’t need to use the traffic when it is crowded in the hot day every day. We usually go out of house nearly evening when the traffic is not crowded. How grateful I have been for this gift.
Spending Less Money in Curriculum
Children at the public school have to spend more money in the textbooks they use. Every year children use different textbooks. What the older siblings use might not be able to use for the younger siblings in the next year levels. Homeschooling our children, the younger children can use the same curriculum the older siblings use in the previous time.
In addition, homeschooling our children, we can share the textbooks so that we can have more budget for the literature, fiction, and nonfiction books to purchase. Honestly, the non-textbooks are more everlasting than the textbooks. Everyone in the family can use them.
