Among the fields in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), Mathematics with the 4 basic pillars (numbers, geometry, statistic, and measurement) is the basic of all. Therefore, mathematics is delivered in many different ways to children even when they are still toddlers. Children start their mathematics journey with learning the number concepts from the vocabulary, spelling and counting.
Many people think that the numbers are the most difficult for children to recognize, spell, and memorize in the little children’s mind so that they forget to dig and emphasize the concept behind the numbers. When children come to the elementary levels, many of them have problems with the basic concepts when dealing with the problem solving questions or word problems. Word problems and problem solving don’t rely on the mathematic skills only. They also need more skills in:
- logical thinking for analysis
- systematic presentation
That is what happen to my children also. Children are great in counting and drill, but they get frustrated when it comes into the problem solving or word problems. I have looked for some resources to help my children doing the problem solving and word problem questions and finally I find The Redbird Mathematics Advanced from Giftedandtalented.com which can help children to deal with the areas of maths learning.
I received a three month subscription for free and I am being compensated for my time to write this review. These are my honest opinions and I was not required to write a positive review.
What is Redbird Mathematics?
Redbirds Mathematics is an online mathematics course from Giftedandalented.com. The first time I know this company, I was not confident whether my youngest son would be suitable with this program since I don’t feel that he is “gifted” in maths. He just loves maths a lot. I thought that this is an exclusive product for gifted children. However, looking up more detail in the profile, I would like to quote:
Our goal is to help students of all abilities become advanced learners. We believe the term gifted should be the destination and not a labeled starting point.
Redbirds Mathematics: Advanced Edition Grades K-7th has variations for both tutor supported and independent study. They are for year K-7. There are also other courses available. The courses, originally developed through Stanford University’s Education Program for Gifted Youth have purposes to increase learning, acceleration, and academic confidence for students of all abilities.
Online Homeschooling Math Lessons with Redbird Mathematics for Us
I enrolled our youngest son, Jim who is on his third grade level simply because he loves maths. He needs some more challenging activities. He is good in drilling, but he really needs help with problem solving or word problems. It is not because of language, but it is in a matter of comprehension and analysis.
There are some online mathematics curriculums we have tried and we used them for our alternative resources. Here are some unique benefits we get from using Redbirds Mathematics: Advanced Edition Grades K-7th:
Problem solving and word problem methods
It is not easy to get Jim understand a problem solving or word problem questions in mathematics. I was surprised that Redbirds Mathematics emphasizes the methods in doing the problem solving and word problems from some points of view with some ways of working out.
The methods take step by step from understanding the words, analysis, recording, and conclusion. We have some challenges with the language since English is not our native language, but after some translation for a few problems, I found Jim could work them out well. Besides, the problem solving and word problems are very challenging to build up his critical thinking.
Regular feedback and report for both parents and children
There are some feedback and report system that I like a lot.
- When he doesn’t access the program, I will receive email reminding me to get him access the program. When I told him about the letter, he sounds that someone take care of him by reminding. Well, to have online program for children, parents should control the attendance so children can get the maximum benefits out of it. The regular reminder is very useful for me.
- There is a chart for all children activity. It is not me that control his learning. I only remind him to take the lessons regularly when he forgets. He likes to analyse his own level and target. Each time he does the lesson, the grade level will change.
Support my children’s visual learning style
Many of the questions in each topic has virtually “hands-on” scrapping paper that we usually use for manual traditional mathematics. Some of the explanation also uses models as well. For my son, he says that the tool is cool. He can get the answer very easily. The tool is very supportive for the visual learners. Here is how the program look like:
Do you see how children use a virtual ruler in measuring fish? There are also some other dragging tools to compare areas, weight, and volumes.
Real life cases with supportive data
In the end of each topic, there is some projects based on the real life cases. Those projects are equipped with some relevant mocked logical data required. Jim has some problems with this, so I need to help him. He practice a lot building up his critical thinking skills. Anyway, after he understands the problems and the analysis step by step, he experienced his AHA moment. From that point, he starts to understand the importance of mathematics in the real life.
I would like to recommend Redbirds Mathematics for children in the grade level ranges who love mathematics and ready to challenge others. If you are parents who are looking for any ways to help your children understand and do the ballet lessons.
