I cannot believe that it is our eight month of schooling and blogging. It is in the middle of the second semester of 2013-2014 academic year. I start collecting information about next year curriculum while put the work of this academic year organized. Here are some of activities:
Tom has just finished his Math Mammoth 5A and he is going to start the 5B soon. The last chapter is about decimal in measurement metric units. Finally, Tom can do this part by himself. Now he is doing a chapter on problem solving.
Ken is reviewing some exam materials. He does 2 sets of Math exam practice in a week. From the questions, we discuss how to find the correct answer easily.
Well, we use Exploring Creation With Botany — Young Explorer Series (Young Explorer (Apologia Educational Ministries)) since November 2013. It has been very fun using it. We have done a couple of topics about root and tree on the 8th month. Tomorrow we are doing nature walk to the city plantation garden. We are planning to analyze plants by observing the flowers and leave characteristics. There should be some bark scrubbing activity to see how different barks of trees one from another.
Ken has finally finished The Black Pearl. I really love how he could retell the story using his own English both written and oral. I can see that he really comprehend the story well. Unfortunately, he doesn’t really like the story. At the moment he is reading The Story of Doctor Dolittle (Dover Children’s Thrift Classics) and he enjoys it a lot. He chooses this story by himself. I read some paragraphs of the story in The Complete Writer: Level Two Workbook for Writing with Ease (The Complete Writer) that made him very enthusiastic to read further.
Tom has been very happy with The Trumpet of the Swan (full color). He could do do both oral and written narration. In addition, he made a simple book report for this story. Now he is reading Mr. Popper’s Penguins. I have never seen him that excited reading the story. It was also started when we did the writing lesson. The Complete Writer: Level Two Workbook for Writing with Ease (The Complete Writer) has inspired both of the boys.
Ken has finished the week 11 of Writing With Skill, Level 1: Student Workbook (The Complete Writer). He still needs more help than what I thought, especially in the sentence structure, using proper pronouns, capital letters, and punctuation marks. He makes summary using narrative and descriptive combination after making first level outlines based on a reading passage.
Tom almost finished his The Complete Writer: Level Two Workbook for Writing with Ease (The Complete Writer). I can see he makes great progress in dictation and sentence building. He needs more challenge.
Now they are doing lesson 11 of SPELLING WORKOUT LEVEL E PUPIL EDITION. Spelling City has been very helpful for us since kids are really refreshed from learning new words and spelling by playing games. We don’t need to look up the words in the dictionary for many times
We have some absence in using First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind: Level 4 Student Workbook (First Language Lessons) . We are more focused in using Grammar Time 3 SBk Pack NE. They have finished the past simple and continuous tenses. Now they are doing the question agreement.
We have just finished the natural disaster chapter in the Social Studies text book. We did similar topic previously, but this time we did the Indonesian text book version. It was quite dry, but we need to do some review and to get Ken used to the Indonesian terms of Natural Disaster topic as he needs to prepare himself for the exam. At the moment we have just finished the globalization topic and there will be a test next week.
Tom has been doing elements of a fiction in Bahasa textbook chapter 9 very well. He read some folk stories and analyze the elements of the stories based on the theory he read by himself. He does all of the text book’s tasks patiently can carefully. I rarely helps him in doing Bahasa.
Ken just did his Bahasa Exam practice not so well. He often gets in hurry when he comes to the end numbers of the exam practice so that I have to ask him redo the Bahasa test.
It is very hard to get kids being interested in reading or learning Civics, indeed. Honestly, I would be very happy if I could leave this subject out of the curriculum. Anyway, we still have to do this. I am looking out a good way in doing this subject. Our progress in this subject is quite slow.
We still haven’t finished with the Ancient Rome yet. We are going to finish our lap book about the Ancient Rome, beside doing The Story of the World: History for the Classical Child: Volume 1: Ancient Times: From the Earliest Nomads to the Last Roman Emperor, Revised Edition. We are doing chapter 35 of the book about Caesar fought the Celts. The lap book covers the life of Ancient Rome. I hope that we can start with the second book soon.
There are a lot of things to do in the middle of the second semester of academic year 2013-2014.
