This posting is a bit late because we are a bit crowded with some closing the semester to start the new one. We are renewing our bulletin board and planners to get ready in 2014. We also don't have any field trip from mid November to December so far. It start raining almost everyday in the afternoon so that the soil is still wet in the next day. We planned to visit the garden doing some observation but it failed because we got sick by turn because of the seasonal changing. It really make us upset.
Ken is adjusting his maths subject with the national curriculum to catch up for the national exam he is doing around April or May 2014. Just in one month he has caught up with a whole first semester normally taken by the school. It is such a hard work. He does 5 pages daily and today is his evaluation for semester 1 Grade 6 normal school.
Tom has just finished his mental math and large number operation in Math Mammoth Light Blue 5. Now he is doing problem solving. I really like the way Math Mammoth introducing problem solving using fraction and ratio. All problems are introduced gently. Even Tom the maths hater can understand the steps well.
Jim just finished with time measurement (introduction to days, months, week, years both in English and Bahasa Indonesia and also length of activities/duration) and Geometry (2D and 3D introduction bilingual)
We focus on and flowers and pollination. Kids were excited in kinds of carnivorous flowers, flower families, and flower dissection. At the moment we are in the middle of pollination chapter.We just read about some kinds of pollinators and how different they pollinate the flowers. We are amazed at how God creates all the pollinators with all features which are needed by various flowers. There are a lot of nature walk schedule that we dismissed as the weather didn't allow us to make it. We should do it once the rain tamer.
English Language Arts
Ken has just finished his Oliver Twist (A Stepping Stone Book Classic), the abridged one which he found not in his level as it is too easy for him. I checked his reading journal and I was surprised that he could write the summary chapter by chapter very well. Now he is reading The Black Pearl by Scott O Dell. This book is quite challenging for him, but I found that he has improved a lot in his language skills. Therefore, I chose this book for him. He writes reading journal to bookmark his understanding toward that story.
Tom has finished The Tales of Two Cities taken from Usborne Illustrated Stories from Dickens. Although the language is not too difficult, the story is quite complicated for him to comprehend. I have to help him a lot. Now he is reading Swiss Family Robinson (A Stepping Stone Book). I can see that his interest in vocabulary to understand the story is increased. He wrote his reading journal tidily.
Ken has completed week 1 to week 4 of Writing With Skill, Level 1: Student Workbook (The Complete Writer)independently. I check his work regularly. He sometimes asks for help, but everything has been provided in Writing With Skill, Level 1: Instructor Text (The Complete Writer) so I don't need to read all the long passage to help him. Ken also starts using thesaurus and he is surprised about its function.
Tom keeps going with The Complete Writer: Level Two Workbook for Writing with Ease (The Complete Writer). We do it much more relaxing. Tom like having a private attention.
Both Ken and Tom just finishedtheir regular and irregular past tense verb use in statement, negative, and question sentence patterns. However, we need to be consistant using it in writing. They also have finished with comparative and superlative adjectives. Now they are doing adverb od manner.
As we said on our previous postings, we use Spelling Workout D the last time in spelling lesson. Tom has just finished his D level. He is doing the E lesson. Now he is doing his first lesson of level E. Ken is finishing the last lesson of level D, which is the review for lesson 31-36.
We just finished our European and Australian study. The Australian study was amazing. Kids enjoyed the varieties of the Australian animals that they could not see in other parts of the Earth. We are starting the north American continent.
We finished with China, the first emperror Shi Huang Di, and Confusius discussion. We use notebooking to summarize their learning. We are
Both of Ken and Tom worked with Indonesian poem. They answered questions about and paraphrase the poems. They answered some classical Indonesian Reading comprehension with some types of passages.
Our civics is quite terrible this month as kids don't want to read the text book. I am confused how to deal with this problem. Civics has been one of the national requirement. Well, I will think further about it.
At the end of the year, we will have a long holiday as everyone else usually have. We cannot wait for it.
