This is our first month of 2014 to write a wrapping up post. We had a very long holiday from December 23rd 2013 to January 5th 2014. Kids were not really enthusiastic at the end half of December 2013 as the holiday season was really tempting for us. We also haven’t done much during this month. Even we didn’t do any Christmas themes or topic. We have been too restless.
Tom finished his problem solving chapter. As you know, we use Math Mammoth series and he is doing his 5A level. The problem solving chapter was very impressing. I cannot believe that Tom could transfer all of the word problem solving in the chapter into some algebra equation very well. He just needs to be more confident. I start to stay away from him to get him used to work independently. It is a real tough work, indeed. He has just started doing his Decimal.
Ken has been pretty bored doing the Indonesian Mathematic textbook to prepare for his National Standardized Exams. Keeping it happens until April 2014 is quite hard to think.
We have just finished chapter 4 and 5 of Exploring Creation With Botany — Young Explorer Series (Young Explorer (Apologia Educational Ministries)). We tried hard to get time going to the park. We are compiling some minibooks and notebooking pages in Botany, but we don’t adopt all of the things.
I am very happy when I see Ken very interested reading The Boxcar Children (The Boxcar Children, No. 1) (Boxcar Children Mysteries). He has never read any plain text book or such kind of novel for kids before, even for any Indonesian book (our first language). As a result, his English vocabulary is much improved. Recently Ken reduces his comic reading and starts reading more wordy books. However, We reread The Black Pearl together as it seems he had some trouble in comprehending it.
Tom likes reading our Magic Tree House Series in his silent reading time. We haven’t done any project with this series yet. It is just reading for fun. He has just finished reading Swiss Family Robinson. He is going to start The Trumpet of The Swan on Monday.
Ken finished his Writing With Skill, Level 1: Student Workbook (The Complete Writer), week 5 already. He has been familiar making outline. He is more fluent using sentence conjunction at the moment so that his writing style is much improved. Around this week he is doing a chronological narrative writing.
Tom is much better doing his narration. I don’t help him anymore writing his World History narration. I just need to proof read his writing. He could summarize stories well.
As we mention in our posting about Our Curriculum in 2013-2014, we use First Language Lesson 4 and we have finished week 38. Kids are getting used to various sentence diagramming. They can make diagrams for statements, questions, and commands. We haven’t added any poem memorization yet.
In Grammar Time (part of our ESL program) kids are doing future tenses after finishing the past tenses. It seems the future tense is much easier than the past one.
We have just finished Spelling Workout D and now they are doing Spelling Workout E. Tom can handle the dictation very well.
We liked learning about the USA. Fortunately, I have a lot of blogging and homeschooling buddies who live in the USA, so we did some small chat to answer some curiosity of the children. We learn about a world which is really opposite with our location. It was very exciting.
Ken didn’t do as many Indonesian lessons and learning. He use the time with me to do private learning to prepare the national exam.
Tom has just finished semester one final test which should be thrown before the holiday.
As I said previously, Ken doesn’t do the common Bahasa lessons, but he had some textbooks or modules to get him prepared for the national exam.
I was surprised in the way Tom finished all of his chapter 7 test. He got 100% for the score. However, kids still needs a lot of practice in Bahasa Writing.
