It has been our third year applying notebooking in our homeschooling and we still feel that notebooking is still the best way for helping our kids in many different aspects. There are many different reasons for doing notebooking, but during the time some homeschooling parents ask me about problems in notebooking activities that they have. Here are some questions and problems that might prevent problems in the notebooking activities:
Planning for the units
People might think that planning a notebooking activities is something complicated. The problem happens when the schedule becomes crowded so that parents are going to to be rushed when the notebooking time has “finished” The capability of each learner in finishing works is different from each other. Knowing the working speed of each learner will be helpful to get working not stressful for both parents and children. Don't try to squeeze work too much. Another question is whether we need to do notebooking activities in all lessons? What about if the children get bored with too much notebooking? Don't make notebooking as a burden so that it can kill the joy of learning in children. To start with, just do notebooking with one lesson first. We never had notebooking activities for more than 2 different subjects at once during our first 2 years. Sometimes we combine with lapbooking. For planning the notebooking activities, you might want to have our homeschooling lesson planner
Creating the appropriate templates
Notebooking activities are not exclusive or expensive activities in term of budget, but it becomes exclusive and valuable in terms of ownership and performance. Even we can use common notebooks sold in Walmart and bookstores to do the activities. However, using the plain lined paper will have a sense that children are doing common notes. They will get bored with the activities very soon. Having some variation of notebooking templates will make the notebooking activities more enjoyable as children will have more suitable media to write and draw what they have in their mind. There are many free resources for notebooking page units we can download. If you want to save the money or if you want to customize your own notebooks, you might visit DIY Notebooking Pages. The problem is about time. Do we need to print and create customized after planning or before the lessons? That must be time-consuming activities for parents. To deal with the problems, there are some notebooking page templates available to purchase. We love using things from the Notebookingpages.com. As time goes on, we compile our self made notebooking page templates to purchase as 100+ Notebooking Page Templates to provide homeschooling families blank templates with more than 100 layouts with affordable price. Selecting the right templates
To keep it simple, most parents will provide the plain lined paper with one or a couple of boxes to draw. However, not all narration can come up in the forms of paragraphs. You might need a process narration and there might be also some systematic format. To make notebooking readers enjoy the notebooking, it is great to have suitable notebooking layout for unique content and topic of notebooking activities that you don't need to purchase anytime. For example, when the narration is about a system, it is great to use process layout like this: When the notebooking content is about comparing 2 things, you might use this layout: A narration or a recall writing can use newspaper layout to make it more alive: Those are just one representation example of each group that you can have in the 100+Notebooking Page Templates
Kids are bored with the templates
Using plain lined paper with a few spaces to write all of the time makes kids bored to start and finish the notebooking activities. Having similar templates all of the time will limit the way kids performing their knowledge in the notebooking activities. Using various forms will give them more chance to be more creative in the written narration. Besides, kids will also have more organized ideas for them later to review the notebooking content.
Kids are reluctant to draw or to write
Not all kids enjoy writing as they should be ideally. All of our children enjoy notebooking, but they do it differently. Ken loves writing, Jim loves both writing and drawing, and Tom doesn't like either of them. Tom loves talking. Therefore, they need different kinds of templates in most of notebooking activities Ken will be happy to have more lines on his notebooking page. Jim needs a balance of space for both writing and drawing. Tom will do more drawing while he is talking about what he is drawing. Sometimes I will write his oral narration for him on the draft book and he will copy my handwriting on the notebooking page. On his 10 years old age, Tom should be able to write independently on his notebooking activities, but he might be different from others. Although I try to get him write partially, I still help him to finish his drafting process. I think it is better to do this rather than making more stressful moment between my son and I. Using the right style of learning matched with the notebooking activity pattern will make the learning activities more peaceful and enjoyable. There are 5 more problems that often happen in notebooking activities. We are going to discuss them in the next post.
