This morning we had a very interesting discussion about behavioral adaptation. In our science book, Adaptation by science atoz, there are two kinds of adaptation we are learning. There are physical or structural adaptation and behavioral adaptation. It is mentioned also that both adaptation s give influences each other. This morning we focused on behavioral adaptation.
What made us interesting was a paragraph exemplifying that a singing bird can sing basically since it is born because singing is one feature of inherited behavioral adaptation. It means that birds' ability of singing is from their ‘parents'. However, the singing bird will be able to sing more or better if it practice or copy other singing birds. It is called as a learned behavioral adaptation.
When we came to that point, spontanously the idea of Tarzan and Jane story turned up in my mind. I threw it in the discussion with Ken and Tom. The character of Tarzan is an interesting example of both behavioral and physical adaptation. As a human, Tarzan inherites instinct to socialize with other humans and curiosity of human knowledge when he meets other people. His body posture also adjusts when he socialises and interacts with human. On the other hand, Tarzan learns a lot about being a gorilla from his gorilla parents. He cannot avoid this environmental condition. His voice and manner change also at the same time. Another main character of the story, Jane, has also adapted well based on the cartoon story. When she stays in the jungle, she has to be able climbing and swinging around the wild environment.
Finished with Tarzan topic, I tried to connect behavioral adaptation on reading. Reading is also another behavioral adaptation that can be learnt. There are a lot of life aspects that can examplify in this topic and kids are very enthusiastic with examples. They try to manipulate some cases of adaptation. For example, how does a cactus look like when it lives in rainforest, what happen to polar bear when it lives in plain.
The science unit of adaptation also practice some reading comprehension skills. First of all, they need to recognize main idea and details of some reading passages. In other lessons, they need to do narration about some examples of animal and plant structural adaptation.
There hasn't been any experiment in this topic, but we will draw the imaginative animal adaptation later. We haven't finished this unit yet and we will update later with our picture.
