Playing piano was a dream for me when I was a child. Unfortunately, a piano was something very luxurious for me as my parents couldn't afford it. They only could enroll me to an electone study course. It was great, but I still felt that it was not enough. For me, piano was the basic instrument before learning other instruments. In addition, I also love listening to classic music a lot since I was in high school. Therefore, having a piano had been my goal ever since. Two years ago, I just could save enough money for buying a piano. I bought a UX Yamaha. I was extremely happy.
I start enrolling myself to a private piano lesson. My goal at that time was merely to be able to play piano so that I would be able to entertain myself and others. I felt that I didn't need to apply for certificated exam as I was not young anymore. I also didn't have any career or goals to pursue. I just tried to learn playing piano for fun. With my playing electone (organ) background, I started the second grade piano lesson based on the ABRSM standard. My hands and fingers felt and looked like very stiff like a robot. I thought learning piano was similar to electone as both of them are keyboards. It seemed I was not completely correct. Learning piano required more power as the tuts were heavier to press. Furthermore, we have to well concentrated in reading the more complicated notes.
With a great deal perseverance, I finished the second grade. My tutor encouraged me to take the exam. I was very challenged so I just did it. I passed the exam with merit. The next year I also did the exam well. I was very excited with those result. Now I am preparing the fourth grade exam. During the preparation, I feel desperate and start questioning why I had to take the exam. It is expensive and demanding more time to practice. I just met an old lady from Hongkong. She was also born in Indonesia. She told me her life story. When she moved to Hongkong, she didn't have enough money buy an apartment for her and her daughter to live in. Because of her piano skill, she could earn money just by giving private piano lesson. Her story touched me a lot. I am just realized that playing piano is a skill and it is an asset for us to get money. We don't know with future economic condition. I am just started to get motivated again.
Now my goal and motivation for playing piano has changed. I play piano
1. to control my emotion
2. To get my motoric muscle practiced
3. To sharpen my intelligence
4. To get certificate as my personal and emergency asset
Thanks God that I have an opportunity to play the piano. Finally my childhood dream comes true.
