Last Saturday spent our times watching The Croods from DVD at home. This is a movie about the life of a cavemen family which changed into a more modern family. It was said that The Croods was the only family left out in the prehistoric age. There were 6 members of the family:
- Grug – the over protective dad
- Ugga – the lovely mom
- Eep – the rebellious teenage daughter
- Thunk – the meat headed son
- Gran – the wild mother in law
- Sandy – the wild toddler
They spent their time together most of the time and they were always safe because of hiding in their cave whenever dangers came. Their life was monotonous until Eep met a boy named Guy who could make fire and headed to a land named “tomorrow”. The plot was about the adventure of the family following Guy to the land of tomorrow.
I was very interested to some points in the story:
I am interested to a couple of characters, Grug and Guy who had always been in contrast in appearance, attitude, and manners. Grug, the father, always feels fully responsible toward everyone in the family so that always looks for a cave whenever they are in a new place. What came in my mind was that this character symbolises people who don’t want to take a risk accepting new things so they will always look for a safe place hiding themselves avoiding the risk. Such kind of persons will be struggled and might never be able to look for new things better in the land of tomorrow as they will be worried about everything happens. He thinks about new things pessimistically from the negative points of view. On the other hand, Guy, was a very optimistic person to always look for new things turn up. He searches a better life in the land of tomorrow with very logical and positive thinking.
We can see how contrast they are from their appearance. Grug looks strong and heavy. I think it symbolizes the strong principle and the heavy step or movement. Guy looks very weak and light. It seems he can be moved anywhere easily. People might think that Guy doesn’t have strong principle. I think he has principle but, it is the logic one as he is very flexible. Behind his appearance, he has a strong will to go to the land of tomorrow by overcoming a lot of dangers. This appearance contrast leads also to the way they rely on when they have to solve problems. Grug relies a lot on his physical strength while Guy relies on his creative and smart ideas to solve the problems. Those contrast appearance will lead them to their main goals better when they work together supporting each other.
Secondly, the characteristic growth of Grug is really amazing. His character shifted a lot together with the moving plot of the story. He starts to acknowledge the positive side of Guy. The environmental changes of the setting force him to change his attitude. He tries hard to open his mind toward the change of his environment. I would like to say that it is always possible for people to change. It might be forced by the environment first, but finally it happens. It just needs a will to change. In the middle of the adventure, Grug tries hard to get some new ideas in his mind, like having picture on the stone.
Thirdly, I have a personally important message for me that different characteristics and insights in a group can get together when the situation and condition force them to get united. It was very interesting that the tiger wants to be Grug’s pet as they were enemies before. That Grug accepts Guy in the group is not merely caused by the sportive character of Grug only, but also the forcing situation and condition that have great role.
Well, this movie was launched last March 2013, but my bro in law just lent us last Saturday. It accompanied our weekend nicely. After the movie, we discuss about the prehistoric life. Kids really loved it. I think you might have watched it as we have been too late. If you haven’t watch it, I would like to recommend you watching it, especially if you have children around.
