Electronic devices have played very important parts in our life. My hubby and I were not grown up surrounded by these magic things around us. Our kids generation is very different from ours. I wonder what happen with our grandchildren and grand grand children generation later. There wasn’t any handphone or computer when I was in the kindergarten and elementary school. Therefore our childhood lifestyle in the past is extremely different with kids’ childhood at the moment.
Those electronic gadgets are really awesome. They can make kids more skilful in technology and gives them more choices of learning, information, and entertainment. However, get in touch of television and electronic games in the computer, handphone, tablet, video games too much or in a long time will have some negative effects toward children mental, social, and physical development. The amount of too much itself is various. I would rather to assume that too much is when they don’t respond to your call or more than 1 hour usually for my kids. I think you can mention some of them very well.
- Lack of real oral social and oral communication
Too much watching the screen can get the children separated from real people life. Children become lazy to speak up. Having eye contact with others will just considered as stealing away their time. For under 5 years old children, it will lead them into speech delay problem. Most parents around me who have toddlers spending their time often for watching TV will have speech delay. They don’t practice their oral, and even courtesy at all as they lost the world of the screen.
- Reduce physical movement
Concentration in front of the screen will make their body forget how to move I think. It is not a problem with the children only, but also with adults. Sitting down too long will kill muscles and will add up fat. It is getting worse when some unhealthy snack accompanying. Spending too much time in front of both television and other internet gadget will decrease children’s motoric skills. They won’t try harder doing better handwriting as they prefer typing, for example.
- Limit hands on creativity
Watching too much television and doing more work with the gadget will reduce their time doing some creative arts work or musical skills. Even children will not be interested in DIY work such as woodworking, planting, cooking, drawing, etc. Imaginary process they met in the simulation games has replaced the real one in the real world.
- Destroy reading habits
Television and a lot of electronic games will make the kids lazy to read. Reading requires people to work more in working out our brain to imagine what happen in the written form, while television and electronic games just do the working out brain function. All of the action and facts have been presented very well and they don’t need to be proceeded by further thinking. Therefore, the brain is not trained well for the ability of imagining and constructing what happen. As a result, children have difficulty in following written instruction, writing ability, etc.
- Thread children’s eyes health
There are a lot of medical researches on this topic just googling around the web, it is stated definitely clear that watching television and electronic gadget will get our eyes ruined. I am not going too far. It happens to myself when I spend too long and too frequent time in front of my laptop and my tablet, my eyes will get blur or even red. The radiation of the screen is very dangerous. It isn’t only applied for cheap or maybe not sophisticated technology only. Even the low exposure and bright of the screen, sooner or later will get my eyes tired. Can you imagine what happen with the young children. It is not surprising that there have been more and more children wearing glasses because of this reason.
- Add hidden stress in children’s brain
Watching television and playing electronic games look very engrossing. Children are challenged to achieve their goals in the games or try to escape from something in the games. Some climax in the movie will make the head stand straight or their shoulder not moving at all. It makes the blood not flowing smoothly to the brain so that brain will get less oxygen than what it requires. It will lead to unconsious stress. It will make children’s sleeping quality is not good so that the growth is not maximum. Even my son Jim will wet his pants once he is too engrossed in the games or movie.
- Reduce Environmental and social awareness
Some attention and awareness toward environment and people around the children have been decreased lately. It is very rare that children greet neighbours, put up the litter to the trash, clean up their stuff without being reminded, etc. Watching too much television or getting addicted with the electronic games have played some role in this case. Children just will be more caring toward virtual things rather than the concrete and real things as their brain is trained to be.
- Lead children to a more aggressive behaviour, ADHD and other attention problem
Some TV program and electronic games have a lot of violation themes both the direct and indirect ones. Children who are still pure and not mature, will tent to copy them without any guidance from adults. Here is some article about that.
Television and electronic games look like angels but it can turn to be demons if we as parents don’t control our children to use them properly. Selecting which program and what games to play might be helpful to face the problem, but limiting the time will be the main homework for us. What do they do than when they have limited time with the television and electronic games? Please stay tune for the answer.
