Summer has come already. It has been a tradition around the world that people will travel or will work less during this hot season, that we call it a vacation. What happens when you have summer without vacation? You might have some conditions when you are not possible to travel or do vacations. What can children do in the hot days? Will they feel bored and frustrated? It won’t happen if you plan the activities.
Although we don’t have the real summer like what you have when you live in the 4 seasoned countries, we can feel the smell of it. It is very hot and humid here recently. Lucky for us that the schooling year has finished. What does it mean? Don’t we have anything to do without the schooling time? That is completely wrong. Summer holiday means more freedom in our daily routines. It is a great time for children to build their skills.
Some parents with children who usually go to either the public or private school might complain a lot when the summer holiday is going on. They are confused what the children can do so they don’t get bored. It is completely different for the homeschooling family. We have made a commitment that our home is the basic of the children’s education that is not about academic life all of the time. The real life is the real education itself. Therefore, the more freedom in the summer holiday is a part of the real life education.
Summer holiday is not only about vacation. This year we don’t have any vacation at all. We do have some short field trips, but there are still some educational points for them. They are not merely vacation or traveling. Here are some activities for homeschooling parents and children in the summer holiday.
What Children Can Do in The Summer without Vacation
Joining the Camps
Camping together as a family will be a great option to use the summer holiday. Kids are getting more familiar with the nature. In addition, they are expected to be more independent and conscious with the environment around them. Last year we had family scout camping.
We give away some camping mini unit for children to use for FREE
You might also get children join some bible camp with the church to get other benefits than just a camping activity.
Playing Some Non-electronic Games
The holiday might feel exciting for children to play the electronic games for longer time, but some restriction should be applied so that children will be able to communicate better with others. In addition, some fun experience with the non-electronic games will be more beneficial for children to have.
Joining Some Holiday Programs
There are some holiday programs available both for online and not online access. A couple of weeks ago I have just shared some summer holiday programs available to access online. In case you have not got informed, check them out in these links bellow:
Doing Some Nature Walk Activities
Summer is a great time for doing some hobby activities. If your children love science, you have some choices for either doing some experiments or nature walk activities. Here is a great resource for both spring and summer learning. Click the image bellow.
Do Stargazing or Learn Astronomy
There is also some alternatives for doing self-astronomy learning. Check out a great book about astronomy activities by clicking the picture bellow:
Having Playdate with Friends
Summer holiday will give more time for children to play together with their friends. Dropping them to friends’ house or to some great place to play together will be a great chance for children to learn how to behave and how to be more independent.
Get some appointment with other parents to have a kind of schedule for play date. If you feel that children can be independent, parents can use the children play date time for other things.
Summer is also a time for children to go for the community and working experience. It might not wait until you have teenagers to get them involved in the community work. Even the kindergarten aged children can do some summer community work by helping their parents to do some chores more intensively.
If your children are excited with some activities with the community helper, you might check out some printables we provided for the community helper research.
Cooking might be your children regular routine, even when it is not summer holiday. However, some simple outdoor cooking and picnic experience should be a very exciting activity for children. Of course some adults accompaniment is needed to make sure the safety.
Plan your menu, cook together, and even you can invite others to enjoy your food.
Having Some Arts Projects
There’s nothing quite like summertime – long, lazy days playing outdoors in the hot sunshine, eating homemade ice cream or juicy watermelons, catching lightning bugs just after sunset, or camping out in the backyard at night. Kids live for summer when they’re as free as birds! But sometimes they get a little bored too…
Some arts activities will be a great things to kill the time. Even you can enjoy it together with children. You might also join Celebrate Summer: Mixed Media Workshop, a 4-week arts e-Course. Classes will be taught via videos in a private, password-protected site
Cleaning Up The Rooms
The schooling time might have left some dirty areas in your house since everyone is busy and you might be neglectful toward some detail spots in your house. Getting children cleaning the untouched areas of your house will be a useful activity for you to do with children. Of course, some incentives might be given at the end of the activities.
By cleaning more detail areas, you give a chance for children to feel the satisfaction of working. They will also have a consciousness to keep the areas clean.
Joining Some Community Activities
There should be also some community activities during the summer holiday. Try to get as much information as you can to get some alternatives for summer holiday. Boy scouts, youth church, and hobbies communities can be some great resources for information.
